We returned to the First Direct Arena in Leeds following our successful debut in 2015. Hosted by Maya Jama, the youngest host in MOBO history, alongside Marvin Humes, fans were treated to sensational performances from the likes of Cardi B, Davido, Krept and Konan, Stormzy, Stefflon Don, Ray BLK, Not3s, Yungen & Yxng Bane, Tokio Myers and the very recently formed B Positive Choir – who delivered a moving performance of “Rise Up” to highlight the need for new registrations of much needed blood donors.
Stormzy was the big winner on the night. He scooped three MOBO trophies: Best Grime Act (public vote), Best Male Act and Best Album for the chart-topping Gang Signs & Prayer. J Hus scooped Best Song for “Did You See” and Stefflon Don won her first ever MOBO for Best Female Act. Mist joined the likes of FKA twigs and Skepta to win Best Video. (These 5 categories were exclusively voted for by MOBO’s external Judging Panel).
The public voted for Dave as Best Newcomer, Giggs as Best Hip Hop Act and WizKid as Best International Act. Davido was crowned this year’s Best African Act and Damian Marley won Best Reggae Act.
We honoured A-list actor Idris Elba for his achievements in the arts and for his very fine contribution to British Culture for which he was bestowed with the MOBO Paving The Way Award. Previous recipients are: Wiley, Sir Lenny Henry, Ms. Dynamite and Nicola Adams.
2017 also marked our third annual Pre-Awards for which we headed to The Boisdale in London for an intimate event. Celebrating artists within the genres of R&B/Soul, Jazz and Gospel, respective winners on the night were Craig David, who won his sixth MOBO Award, Moses Boyd and Volney Morgan & New Ye.
