20 Years Of Baduizm

I’m that annoying work colleague that screams in shock when music news that excites me comes around. The day the press release for Ms. Badu’s one-off London performance appeared in my inbox was no different, screams followed….

To a young black woman whose obsession is music fused together with the fact that like most 20 somethings, I’m finding my way in the big wide world, Erykah Badu is an idol. Not in the millennial mind set where idols are valued by their social media following but to me personally, Erykah Badu is a soul idol... deep right?

I remember the first time I watched the video for 'Window Seat,' I was completely memorised. Mesmerised by her bravery, her sense of self and power of expression. To see a woman of colour completely take ownership of her sexuality is something that inspires me in so many ways.

So, the night of the show arrived and we made our way down to Hammersmith Apollo. An array of Bantu knots and women in beautifully coloured head wraps were already stood in line, you could feel the excitement in the air, even in the smiles of the security guards I’m sure.

“The world is mine, When I wake up, I don’t need nobody telling me the time, who gave you permission to rearrange me, certainly not me “

The Healing (Set)

The opening was nothing less than amazing. As she entered the stage stomping her feet to the sound of the drum she commanded the energy and attention of all those that had come out. One thing that became noticeable to me was the strength and continuity of herself and the band, the energy was orgasmic.

When the audience would recognise the beat/melody of the next track she was about to perform, the roar of excitement and applauds were warming. From ‘Call on Tyrone’ to ‘See You Next Lifetime,’ her voice, stage presence and tapping of her funk box surpassed any expectations I’d imagined would be fulfilled.

Thank you to Mama Badu for your many lessons, showing young women and men worldwide that there is profound beauty and strength in being unique. Even bigger thanks to NEO LUV for organising an event that will live on in the heart of her fans for years to come.
