The new developments coming out of the investigation into Rashan Charles’ death may assist in getting the Charles family the justice they deserve.

The 20-year-old father of one died last weekend after being restrained by officers in nearby Dalston. At the time, CCTV footage showed Charles entering a shop pursued by a uniformed police officer, after which there was a struggle on the floor. In the footage, he appeared to put his hand to his mouth to swallow an object, which investigators initially reported might have been a controlled substance. However, the item removed from his airways was not a controlled substance, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has found.

There will be further investigations into “police worn footage” and other CCTV by the IPCC.

The statement added, via the BBC:

“We will independently examine the circumstances of this incident, we will follow the evidence, we will consider whether there is an indication there may have been misconduct or criminality and we will seek to answer the questions that Rashan’s family and the community of Hackney understandably have.”
