Skepta’s trainer – which will retail for £144.95 – has been inspired by his travels in Morocco. The design marks the MOBO Award-winner’s second time linking up with Nike: last February, he unveiled a special edition spin on the Air Max BW based loosely on his 2012 project Blacklisted. Those were one-offs and not made available for retail. However, the Air Max 97 Sk is being advertised for purchase on the Nike website and will also be available in male and female sizes.
Words from Nike’s official website:
Same Hustle. Different continents. London and Marrakesh may seem worlds apart, but not through the eyes of Skepta. Through his travels from London, Skepta discovered that Marrakesh shares the same young, unapologetic energy as his hometown; a home away from home. The Air Max 97 Sk draws on Skepta's inspiration from both cities, marrying them with his passion for Air Max to create something unique and forward-thinking.
In a statement, Skepta said:
“I am blessed to have been able to travel the world doing what I do. After touring so much, I was looking for some peace. I found Morocco, and it was perfect. Everything I wanted to feel about peace, I found it there. I like the architecture, the pastel colours, the taxis, the way that you could just go into a small little souk, open a door and it brings you into a big, massive, beautiful new world that you never would have expected.”
To celebrate the release of his latest Nike collaboration, Skepta will host an event in London inspired by a Moroccan souk on September 2. The launch event will fuse a classic London street market with elements of a Moroccan souk and also feature live performances from a host of artists, including Stefflon Don, Maximum, 67, Spyro, Ms Banks, Kenny Allstar and Daniel OG.
